Mimic Tang

Acanthurus pyroferus

Marine Marine Indo-Pacific

Juveniles famously mimic toxic pygmy angelfish such as Centropyge vrolikii or flavissima, morphing into a handsome chocolate adult. This active surgeonfish demands plenty of swimming room, vigorous water movement, and steady grazing on marine algae. Avoid housing it with similar Acanthurus species to minimise territorial squabbles.

Also called: Mimic surgeonfish, Chocolate surgeonfish.

20 cm adult length, drawn to scale. deep body.

Saltwater species. The planner judges it with a marine rule set. A reef or fish-only tank takes months to mature and costs more to run than freshwater. See the marine page.
