Tank volume calculator
Measure the inside of the glass in centimetres. You get the water to the brim, the usable volume once you leave room at the top, and the weight the stand has to carry.

Brim volume and usable volume
Brim volume is every litre the glass could hold. A working tank is never filled to the rim: the water sits a few centimetres below the top, and rock, wood and substrate take up space. The calculator takes 85 per cent of the brim figure as usable water, which is the number to use for stocking and for working out heater and filter size.
How the weight is worked out
Water weighs 1 kg a litre. The glass adds about a quarter of a kilogram for each litre of brim volume, and the substrate is counted at 1.5 kg per litre of gravel or sand. The stand figure adds a quarter on top of the total so the furniture is not working at its limit. Rock, decor and a full cabinet of kit are extra.
US and UK gallons
A US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK gallon is 4.546 litres. A tank sold as 60 gallons in the United States is about 227 litres, while 60 UK gallons is about 273. Switch units at the top of the page and every volume here follows.
Next, put fish in the tank and see whether the space, load and water hold up, or read why inch per gallon fails.
