Banded Leporinus
Leporinus fasciatus
Freshwater South America
Distinguished by striking black and yellow bands that increase in number as the fish matures, this South American characin swims with an intriguing head-down posture. It is a notorious fin-nipper and avid plant consumer, making planted tanks unsuitable. House it singly with boisterous medium-sized community fish under a tight, secure lid.
Also called: Banded leporinus, Black-Banded leporinus, Characin.

Diet and tank layout
Banded Leporinus is an omnivore that swims in all levels of the tank. It eats or uproots plants, so choose hard-leaved species or none. Give it some cover. It nips fins.
