Firemouth Cichlid
Thorichthys meeki
Freshwater Central America Usually captive bred
Famed for flaring brilliant red branchiostegal membranes and gill covers to bluff rivals, the firemouth is an iconic Central American cichlid. Its fiery theatrical displays are largely show rather than malice. They sifting through sandy substrates constantly, requiring smooth sand and rocks rather than delicate rooted plants.
Also called: Firemouth, Firemouth cichlid.

Diet and tank layout
Firemouth Cichlid is an omnivore that swims in the lowest part of the tank. It leaves most plants alone. Give it plenty of cover. It digs, so anchor plants and keep hard rock off loose sand. It will eat fish small enough to swallow.
