Common Pleco
Hypostomus plecostomus
Freshwater South America Usually captive bred
A bristly catfish that outgrows most tanks, reaching 35 cm. It leaves a lot of waste and is not a substitute for cleaning algae. Requires a very large tank and driftwood to chew.
Also called: Suckermouth catfish, Janitor fish, Plecostomus, Sea hasar, Spotted pleco.

Tags marked estimated are judged from the size and habits of the species rather than measured, so treat them as a sensible default.
Diet and tank layout
Common Pleco is an herbivore that swims in the lowest part of the tank. It eats or uproots plants, so choose hard-leaved species or none. Give it plenty of cover. It digs, so anchor plants and keep hard rock off loose sand.
