Nicaragua Cichlid
Hypsophrys nicaraguensis
Freshwater Central America Usually captive bred
One of Central America's most colourful cichlids, with females exhibiting dazzling metallic turquoise heads and fiery gold flanks. While moderately peaceful for its size, it is a relentless digger that will uproot living plants and excavate huge breeding pits in sandy substrates.
Also called: Moga, Butterfly cichlid, Nicaragua cichlid.

| Swims in | Near the bottom | Fish that use different levels share a tank more easily. |

Tags marked estimated are judged from the size and habits of the species rather than measured, so treat them as a sensible default.
Diet and tank layout
Nicaragua Cichlid is an omnivore that swims in the lowest part of the tank. It eats or uproots plants, so choose hard-leaved species or none. Give it plenty of cover. It digs, so anchor plants and keep hard rock off loose sand.
