Empire Gudgeon
Hypseleotris compressa
Freshwater Australasia Usually captive bred
An exquisite Australian sleeper goby where displaying males flash intense fiery scarlet, gold, and jet-black patterned fins. Peaceful in community settings, it ignores upper-dwelling tank mates. Breeding is easy, but raising the fry requires marine or brackish conditions due to amphidromous development.
Also called: Australian carp-gudgeon, Carp gudgeon, Empire fish, Empire gudgeon, Northern carp-gudgeon.
