Gymnogenys Eartheater
Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys
Freshwater South America
A delayed mouthbrooding eartheater from the southern reaches of South America, with males growing prominent nuchal humps. It continuously sifts soft sand for food and must experience an unheated winter cooling period to preserve long-term vitality.
Also called: Dark mother-of-pearl fish, Earth eater, Smooth-cheek eartheater.

Diet and tank layout
Gymnogenys Eartheater is an omnivore that swims in the lowest part of the tank. It leaves most plants alone. Give it some cover. It digs, so anchor plants and keep hard rock off loose sand.
