Black Acara
Cichlasoma bimaculatum
Freshwater South America Usually captive bred
A classic, hardy South American cichlid with dark mottled markings and subtle iridescent spangling on the fins. Relatively calm outside breeding, a bonded pair will turn fiercely protective of their brood. Provide driftwood, sturdy decor, and companions large enough to avoid being regarded as food.
Also called: Black acara, Brown acara, Common patwa, Congo patwa.

Diet and tank layout
Black Acara is an omnivore that swims in the lowest part of the tank. It leaves most plants alone. Give it plenty of cover. It digs, so anchor plants and keep hard rock off loose sand. It will eat fish small enough to swallow.
