Callochromis macrops

Callochromis macrops

Freshwater Lake Tanganyika, Africa

This shimmering, large-eyed sand-dweller from Lake Tanganyika is famed for the impressive craters constructed by displaying males. Males are relentless courters and aggressive territory defenders. A spacious footprint with expansive soft sand and a harem of females is vital to dilute aggression and permit natural sifting behaviour.

Diet and tank layout

Callochromis macrops is an carnivore that swims in the lowest part of the tank. It leaves most plants alone. Give it some cover. It digs, so anchor plants and keep hard rock off loose sand.
